In the hustle and bustle of modern life, one aspect that often gets neglected is the importance of quality sleep in maintaining overall well-being. As we delve into Better Sleep Month, we must pause and reflect on the crucial role that sleep plays in our daily lives. Sleep is not merely for rest, it is a fundamental biological process, essential for mental and physical health.

Sleep and Mental Health:

How does sleep affect mental health? Sleep plays a crucial role in mental health and emotional well-being. Quality sleep enhances cognitive function, memory consolidation and emotional regulation. By ensuring sufficient rest, we can better cope with daily stressors and maintain a positive outlook on life. Chronic sleep deprivation is linked to an increased risk of anxiety, depression and mood disorders.

Impact of Sleep on Physical Health:

Sleep is foundational to our overall physical health, impacting various bodily functions, including immune function, metabolism and hormone regulation. During sleep, the body repairs tissues, boosts the immune system and regulates hormone levels. Adequate sleep is also essential for skin regeneration and repair. During deep sleep stages, the body boosts blood flow to the skin, allowing for better collagen production and skin repair. Lack of sleep can lead to dull skin, dark circles, and premature aging. Chronic sleep deprivation is also associated with an increased risk of heart disease, obesity, diabetes and other chronic health conditions. By prioritizing restorative sleep, we can support our body’s natural healing processes and promote overall wellness.

Quality sleep is not a luxury but a necessity for optimal health and well-being. Better Sleep Month serves as a timely reminder to prioritize rest and rejuvenation. By understanding the importance of quality sleep, we can make conscious efforts to create a sleep-friendly environment, establish healthy bedtime routines and practice relaxation techniques to improve our sleep quality.

Did you know scent has more benefits than you might think? Scent has been shown to profoundly impact various aspects of our well-being. The therapeutic benefits of scent, known as aromatherapy, have been used for centuries to enhance mental, emotional and physical health.

What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is a holistic healing treatment that harnesses the therapeutic properties of natural plant extracts, known as essential oils, to enhance overall well-being. Thought to have originated over 6,000 years ago, aromatherapy has been used in various cultures for its healing and relaxation-inducing properties.

Health Benefits of Aromatherapy:

When inhaled or applied to the skin, these aromatherapy oils can stimulate the olfactory system, or the sense of smell, which is linked to the brain’s emotional center. This results in various therapeutic effects, from reducing stress and anxiety to improving sleep and boosting mood to promoting relaxation. Aromatherapy has been shown to have positive effects on mood and cognitive functions, making it a valuable tool for improving mental well-being and alleviating the symptoms of various psychological conditions.

In addition, these oils can also stimulate the limbic system, a part of the brain associated with emotions and memories, resulting in physiological and emotional responses that contribute to the therapeutic benefits of aromatherapy. With the sense of smell being closely tied to our emotions and memories, aromatherapy is a powerful tool for improving mental health.

Adding Aromatherapy in Your Life:

Incorporating aromatherapy into your routine is simple and can have a profound impact on your overall well-being. Whether through essential oil diffusers, aromatherapy candles, bath oils, or topical applications like scrubs, lotions or perfumes, there are many ways to enjoy the benefits of essential oils. You could also try visiting a spa or wellness center as most incorporate aromatherapy into their facilities and services like oil massages or aromatherapy massages

Certain scents, such as lavender and chamomile, are known for their calming properties, helping to alleviate stress and promote a sense of calmness. Create a relaxing atmosphere by using lavender oil before bedtime. On the other hand, invigorating scents like peppermint and citrus can boost energy levels and improve focus. Start your day with an energizing citrus blend to promote productivity.

The benefits of scent extend far beyond just pleasant smells, with physical and emotional benefits. Discover for yourself the soothing effects of aromatherapy!

Mental Health Benefits of Nature

Nature has been shown to positively impact mental health, offering a range of benefits. Whether it’s a walk in the park, a hike in the mountains or simply sitting by water, nature has the power to calm the mind and improve mental health.

  • Stress Reduction: Being in nature can help reduce cortisol levels and alleviate feelings of stress and anxiety. The calming environment and soothing sounds of nature promote relaxation and a sense of peace.
  • Improved Mood: Nature exposure is known to enhance mood and increase feelings of happiness and well-being. The natural surroundings can create a positive mindset.

  • Increased Mindfulness: The sights, sounds and sensations of nature can help cultivate a sense of mindfulness and appreciation for the present moment.

Physical Health Benefits of Nature

Being with nature can also have numerous physical health benefits. Outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling or even gardening can increase physical activity and provide exposure to fresh air and natural sunlight. Additionally, simply spending time in nature has been linked to a healthier body.

  • Enhanced Immune Function: Spending time in the natural environment exposes individuals to beneficial microbes and fresh air, which can help strengthen the immune system and reduce the risk of illnesses.
  • Increased Vitamin D Production: Sunlight facilitates the production of vitamin D in the body, which is essential for bone health, immune function and overall well-being.
  • Better Sleep Quality: Being in nature and exposed to daylight can regulate the body’s circadian rhythm, leading to improved sleep patterns and better overall sleep quality.
  • Boosted Physical Fitness: Activities like walking, hiking and other outdoor experiences encourage physical movement and exercise, improving physical fitness levels, muscle strength and flexibility.

In addition to the health benefits of being in nature, specifically being in or around water is a major factor in overall well-being. With the new year comes a time to reevaluate our wellness routines and set realistic resolutions. One thing to consider incorporating more into goals is simply… water. From ancient practices to modern trends, integrating water into daily routines and rituals can have numerous benefits for overall well-being. Embrace water wellness in the new year!

Soaking in Hot Springs

Hot springs, with their mineral-rich water, have long been known for their numerous health benefits. Compared to ordinary water sources, hot springs offer a wide array of advantages including pain relief by alleviating muscle aches and joint discomfort. The mineral content in hot springs boosts blood circulation and promotes healing for various skin irritations and conditions. Furthermore, hot springs have been found to strengthen the immune system, reduce stress levels, promote relaxation and increase overall well-being.

Participating in Aquatic Exercise

Make a splash with a fitness routine that incorporates aquatic exercise. Whether it’s swimming, water aerobics, or aqua yoga, water offers a low-impact way to build strength, improve cardiovascular health and increase flexibility. Its buoyancy also reduces joint strain, making it a suitable option for individuals of all fitness levels.

Trying Sauna Sessions

The heat therapy of a steam sauna reduces stress, relaxes muscles and improves circulation. The moist heat in steam saunas also opens pores for skin cleansing, while sweating facilitates detoxification and boosts immunity. Steam saunas also alleviate congestion, improve breathing and provide respiratory relief.

Starting Hot and Cold Plunges

Invigorating hot and cold plunges alternate between soaking in hot and cold water, stimulating circulation, reducing inflammation, aiding in muscle recovery and boosting energy levels. Incorporating this practice into daily routines or treating yourself to a spa resort day that includes hydrotherapy treatments offers a refreshing and revitalizing experience.

Bathing in Salt Soaks

Epsom salt, a mineral-rich compound of magnesium and sulfate, offers numerous benefits such as pain relief, inflammation reduction, detoxification, skin improvement and stress relief. It is commonly used in baths, soaking and showering to experience its soothing and revitalizing effects, making it a popular choice for promoting overall well-being.

Prioritizing Hydration

Don’t forget the simplest and most essential form of water wellness – staying hydrated. Sip on water throughout the day to support your body’s functions and boost energy levels. Not only does dehydration affect your physical health leading to headaches, fatigue and dizziness, but it can also impact your mental health as well, like cognitive performance, mood and anxiety levels. Trip: Keep a reusable water bottle handy to ensure you stay hydrated, inside and out.

Water is not just a basic necessity – it’s a vital source of replenishment and revitalization that can help you thrive in the new year. Cheers to a year filled with water wellness!

Are hot springs good for you?

Hot springs have long been known for their numerous health benefits, with their significance even marked by a globally recognized day known as Soakember. Celebrated annually on November 11, Soakember highlights the health benefits of thermal hot springs, hydrothermal therapies and nature-based wellness activities. Spas, resorts and hot springs destinations like Glen Ivy Hot Springs come together as part of a worldwide community to promote the healing power of water during this event.

Thermal hot springs refer to natural hot water springs found in specific regions. These springs are geothermally heated groundwater that rises to the Earth’s surface. Enriched with various minerals, as the hot water dissolves mineral deposits while making its way through rocks and soil in the Earth’s mantle, hot springs offer greater benefits than regular water sources on Earth.

Health Benefits of Soaking in Thermal Hot Springs:

Pain Relief: Hot springs’ mineral-rich, warm waters provide natural pain relief, easing muscle aches and joint pain. They can enhance flexibility and range of movement, making them beneficial for conditions like arthritis, fibromyalgia or sports injuries.

Improved Circulation: Soaking in hot springs can boost blood circulation due to the presence of minerals like calcium and sodium bicarbonate. These minerals support better oxygen flow and circulation, aiding healing and reducing inflammation.

Healthy Skin: Hot springs with elevated sulfur and silica levels offer soothing and healing properties for skin irritations and conditions, thanks to their antifungal and antibacterial effects. Sulfur hot springs can help improve conditions like psoriasis, eczema and acne.

Enhanced Immune System: Some studies suggest that minerals like magnesium in hot springs can boost the immune system, making the body more resilient to illnesses. Magnesium is vital for regulating various immune system functions.

Detoxification: Mineral-rich hot springs aid in detoxification, supporting the body’s cleansing process through sweating, circulation, filtration and elimination. The heat and minerals in the water have specific detoxifying effects on the body.

Stress Reduction: The benefits of mineral baths are not just physical but also mental. The warm water and natural setting are scientifically proven to reduce stress levels, promote relaxation and enhance overall mental well-being.

Improved Sleep: Soaking in hot springs before bed often leads to better sleep by relaxing stiff muscles and calming the mind and body. The body’s hot and cold cycle, along with the relaxation induced by the springs, facilitates a more restful night’s sleep.

Embrace the benefits of Soakember and enjoy the beneficial effects of hot springs on your health and well-being!

With the summer sun shining and the temperatures rising, it’s essential to prioritize protecting our skin, as it is more vulnerable to damage during the summer season. With the right skincare routine and habits, maintaining healthy, glowing skin is easy, even in the heat of summer. Explore effective tips to keep your skin protected this summer with Gwynn Saunders, Glen Ivy Hot Springs’s Salon Supervisor.

1.What are some effective ways to protect skin from UV damage during the summer months?

The most effective way to protect yourself from harmful UV damage is to be consistent with applying and reapplying broad-spectrum SPF. When choosing a sunscreen that is best for you, it is important to consider the certifications awarded to specific brands. Glen Ivy experts recommend using SPF products that are eco-certified organic, water-resistant and Skin Cancer Association-approved. Protecting yourself daily from sun exposure will not only aid in protecting you from skin cancer but, also prevent premature aging and pigmentation caused by those harmful rays.

2. Can you recommend a daily skincare routine to reverse UV damage and keep the skin radiant?

We always recommend having a sustainable Vitamin C in your daily routine. Vitamin C actually enhances your sun protection and prevents post-inflammatory stress and pigmentation. Vitamin C also helps brighten hyperpigmentation that has already affected the skin. Incorporating an exfoliant with lactic acid and retinol into your daily skincare regimen can also be very beneficial. Lactic acid helps to break down hyperpigmentation caused by UV damage. Retinol can be used to even skin tone, texture and wrinkles to keep your skin looking radiant and youthful.

3. Are specific ingredients or products particularly beneficial for protecting and repairing skin from sun exposure?

Repairing your skin with a serum or a mask can be extremely beneficial for post-sun exposure. Adding an antioxidant mask will help to repair free radicals (sunburn). You will also need to replenish your skin with plenty of hyaluronic acid, which holds 10,000 times its water weight. Giving your skin a big drink of water can prevent fine lines and wrinkles and post-inflammatory sun damage.

4. How frequently should sunscreen be applied throughout the day to ensure adequate protection from UV rays?

Sunscreen is recommended to be reapplied every 2- 4 hours to be most effective. This may vary depending on the area or climate you are in or if you are taking a dip in the local pool, beach or lake this summer!

5. In addition to topical skincare products, are there any dietary or lifestyle tips you recommend for maintaining radiant, healthy skin during the summer and beyond?

Staying hydrated is the ultimate skincare secret. Drink plenty of water and consider a diet to promote hydration, such as consuming lots of fruits with high water content. In addition, consider activities this summer that you can stay cool and shaded by the sun!

As we bask in the summer sun, it is important to remember these skincare tips! Consistent application of broad-spectrum SPF and incorporating skin-repairing ingredients like Vitamin C, hydrating hyaluronic acid and antioxidants are vital components of a healthy daily skincare routine.

As the summer heat rises, caring for yourself becomes crucial to feeling your best and refreshed. With the higher temperatures and longer days, it’s just as important to prioritize self-care during the summer months, plus July 24 is International Self-Care Day reminding us all of the importance. From staying hydrated to protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays to choosing the right activities to beat the heat, implementing simple changes can make a big difference in your overall well-being. Check out some essential tips for the summer to ensure you have a safe, enjoyable and relaxing season.

Staying Hydrated During Summer:

Hydrating is one of the most important things you can do for yourself in the summer. Not only does dehydration affect your physical health leading to headaches, fatigue and dizziness, but it can also impact your mental health as well, like cognitive performance, mood and anxiety levels.

Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration or over-exhaustion. Some tips include drinking a big glass first thing in the morning to help you start your day before you get distracted. Additionally, you can try eating water-rich fruits and vegetables throughout the day like strawberries, watermelon, cucumber and zucchini to help you stay hydrated. The goal is to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day or more, especially when spending extended periods in the sun.

  • How to hydrate fast?
    • The fastest way to hydrate is to create a simple electrolyte drink made with a mixture of water, 1/2 teaspoon of salt and two tablespoons of sugar. This mixture is great for restoring fluid balance in the body when fast rehydration is necessary.

Protecting Skin From the Sun:

Protecting your skin from the sun is important because it helps reduce the harmful effects of UV rays, such as the risk of skin cancer. Additionally, sun safety measures can help prevent painful sunburns, protect your eyes and support a healthy immune system weakened by UV radiation.

To protect against the harmful effects of the sun, it is essential to take safety measures such as seeking shade or staying indoors during the peak sun hours. If you do want to be outside, try wearing protective clothing like long sleeves, light colors, hats and sunglasses. Applying sunscreen can also minimize the risk of skin damage from the sun.

  • How often should you reapply sunscreen?
    • It is recommended to reapply sunscreen every two hours, or more frequently if you are sweating heavily or swimming. Applying sunscreen throughout the day is essential in maintaining its effectiveness and protecting your skin.

Staying Cool in the Heat:

If you are looking for things to do during summer it is crucial to keep the weather in mind. Engaging in excessive physical activity in hot weather can have negative effects on the body, leading to heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion or heatstroke.

If it is a hot day, it is recommended to limit physical activity during the hottest part and plan outdoor activities during the early morning or late afternoon, when it’s cooler. Additionally, choosing the right activities can greatly reduce your risk of heat-related illnesses. For example, opt for a beach or pool day where you can cool off in the water.

  • How to stay cool in summer?
    • Water is a great source of relief. Practice water cooling techniques such as taking cool showers or baths or relaxing in a pool to reduce body temperature. You can also place a damp towel over your neck or wrist or keep a spray bottle nearby to mist as needed.

Remember to stay hydrated, protect your skin from the sun and take necessary precautions to stay cool this summer. By practicing these self-care and safety tips, you’ll be able to enjoy the summer season to the fullest.

It’s not just an old wives tale, Epsom salt has been used for centuries to improve overall wellness. Scientific research from the 21st century has backed these benefits and health experts worldwide have embraced the use of Epsom salt. As more and more people are turning to natural remedies for their health and wellness needs, Epsom salt is an great option worth exploring.

What is Epsom Salt:

Epsom salt is not actually salt, however, it does resemble the mineral in that it is a crystalline solid and soluble in water. However, Epsom salt is actually a naturally occurring mineral-rich compound of magnesium and sulfate. The name originated from Epsom, England, a town where it was first discovered in the local water in the 1600s.

Uses of Epsom Salt:

  • Pain relief: Epsom salt baths have many muscle-soothing benefits and can help relieve pain, which can be beneficial for sore muscles, bronchial asthma and migraine headaches.
  • Inflammation reduction: Dissolving in water, Epsom salts release magnesium ions that can aid in reducing inflammation in tissues and joints, offering relief from swelling for individuals with conditions such as arthritis and other inflammatory ailments.
  • Detoxification: Epsom salt can also aid in removing toxins from the body. When added to bathwater, the salt’s minerals draw out harmful toxins and salt out of the body through the highly porous membrane of the skin.
  • Skin Improvement: The skin benefits of epsom salt vary, including exfoliation, improved skin texture and added hydration. Plus, it can help alleviate the symptoms from common skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis and acne by drawing out toxins and impurities.
  • Stress relief: Epsom salt baths aid in enhancing mood, relaxation and sleep quality by replenishing magnesium levels in the body, which can be depleted by stress and increased adrenaline.

How to Use Epsom Salt:

  • Bathing: Epsom salt is most commonly used dissolved in water for bathing. To do so, pour about 2 cups of Epsom salt into a bathtub with warm water. Many spas incorporate the use of Epsom salt or saline pools, allowing guests to experience the benefits.
  • Soaking: Epsom salts can also be combined with water to soak certain areas of the body that need the added benefits, most commonly the feet. To do this, fill a bowl with warm water and dissolve a few tablespoons of Epsom salts (depending on the size of the bowl).
  • Showering: Another at-home use includes Epsom salt as a scrub for the shower. Combine Epsom salt and olive oil or coconut oil to create a paste. Add in essential oils for added aromatherapy benefits.

As we celebrate World Bathing Day this June, it is important to remember the cultural traditions associated with the act of bathing and how beneficial it can be for our physical and mental wellness. Bathing in Epsom salt baths or pools is just one of the many ways to increase your connection to water. Bathing in hot springs and mineral water is also a great reminder of the link between our overall well-being and our planet.

By embracing sustainable skincare, you are not only taking care of your skin but also contributing to a healthier earth. Choosing non-toxic, organic and natural skincare products is a step towards a healthier lifestyle. Plus, by supporting brands that prioritize sustainability you are supporting a healthier environment.

The Rise of Sustainable Skincare:

In recent years, there has been a noticeable shift in the beauty industry towards more natural skincare products. People are becoming more conscious of what they put on their bodies and the impact it has on their health and the environment. This growing awareness has led to the rise of sustainable and clean skincare, a movement that promotes the use of non-toxic, organic and natural ingredients that are beneficial for both you and the earth.

Why Non-Toxic Skin Care Matters for Your Health:

Traditional skincare products often contain synthetic ingredients that can have negative effects on the skin and overall health. These harsh chemicals can strip the skin of its natural oils, causing dryness, irritation and even long-term damage. Additionally, many skincare products contain harmful chemicals such as parabens, phthalates and sulfates. These ingredients have been linked to various health issues, including hormone disruption, allergic reactions and even cancer.

On the other hand, using non-toxic, organic and natural skincare means the products are free from harmful chemicals. Switching your products provides many benefits for both your skin and overall health.

  • Gentle Ingredients: Organic skincare products often contain natural ingredients such as plant extracts and oils that can help maintain the skin’s pH balance and promote healthier skin without harsh chemicals.
  • Boosts Hydration: Natural ingredients are known to be powerful to lock in moisture in your skin. Shea butter and mineral oils like jojoba oil and rosehip seed oil hydrate the skin to prevent dryness, flakiness and rough texture.
  • Improved Skin Health: Choosing clean skincare can lead to improved skin texture and tone. The nourishing properties of organic and natural ingredients can provide essential nutrients to the skin, resulting in a clearer, healthier and more radiant complexion.

The Impact of Choosing Natural Skin Care Products on the Environment:

Not only are natural skincare products better for your health, but they are also better for the environment. Traditional skincare products often use synthetic ingredients derived from fossil fuels, which contribute to pollution and habitat decline. In contrast, organic skincare products are often produced using sustainable practices that are better for the environment and are made from renewable and biodegradable plant-based ingredients which have less of an impact on the environment and help to minimize pollution.

Sustainable Skincare Tips:

When it comes to building a sustainable skincare routine, it’s important to choose the right products for your skin type. Look for non-toxic, organic and natural skincare products that are specifically formulated to address your unique skin concerns. In addition to using natural beauty products, there are other sustainable skincare tips that you can follow to help reduce your impact on the environment.

  • Support Sustainable Brands: Opt for products from brands that use minimal packaging or those that use recyclable materials.
  • Reduce Waste: Invest in reusable products or ones that are made from better materials, like washable makeup remover pads and bamboo cotton swabs to reduce waste.
  • New Approaches: Try incorporating holistic skincare practices into your routine, such as facial massages or dry brushing as a new approach to skincare.

By opting for clean skincare, you can enhance the health and appearance of your skin while also making a positive impact on the environment. Join the clean skincare revolution!
